The Mexican Caribbean island of Cozumel is the perfect abode for life-long fisherman Jose Luis Aguilar of Fish Cozumel charters. In the famed waters surrounding the island, barracuda, bonito, mackerel, shark, tuna, and wahoo can be caught year round; while sailfish, white marlin, blue marlin, and dorado (mahi mahi) tend to bite hard during the May-to-July high season. Even “low-season” fishing is fruitful, as amberjack, grouper, and snapper start chomping at the bait. When you’re off the deep sea, San Miguel is lovely city to explore. With everything from trendy nightlife to ancient Mayan ruins, the island’s lone metropolis has plenty to do on and off the beaten path.
While Fish Cozumel specializes in deep sea fishing expeditions, it can also combine fishing trips with scuba-diving and snorkeling. Cozumel serves as the northern-most border to the world’s second largest reef system and is consistently ranked as one of the top scuba diving spots in the world, so taking time to admire the brilliant habitat is a must. Equipment for fishing, snorkeling, and, if booked, scuba diving is provided. Or if you’d rather avoid the pitch and roll of the deep sea, flats fishing off Cozumel’s northern coast is a good option. All guided trips can be booked for a half day, three quarter day, or full day. The weather in the Mexican Caribbean is warm year round, but it’s best to use caution when planning a vacation during the August to November hurricane season.
Jose Luis Aguilar, who started fishing on a shrimp boat at the age of 14, captains Fish Cozumel’s primary fishing vessel, Second Front, a 31-foot Bertram yacht. During the 2006 Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas—one of the biggest tournaments in the Caribbean islands—the crew of Second Front landed a 220-pound white marlin, which was the tournament’s largest. Captain Aguilar is also an experienced diver, as is his wife, Christina, who guides divers of all levels on excursions.
There are few places in the world where you can snorkel in an ecosystem like the Great Mayan Barrier Reef right before fishing for the great white marlin. Whether you’re a sport fisherman or a marine biologist, Cozumel is the perfect holiday destination and Fish Cozumel is the perfect guide for your offshore adventure.
