Jpemex – San Miguel
Around the city of San Miguel on the island of Cozumel, Captain Juan of Jpemex charters is known as one of the premier fishing guides in the Mexican Caribbean. Famous for its bountiful sport fishing, the waters of Cozumel produce a tremendous variety of fish. In any season, one can catch barracuda, bonito, mackerel, shark, tuna, or wahoo; from May to July, however, the billfish come out in force: sailfish, white marlin, and blue marlin start attacking, and grand slams—catching all three in one day—are a legitimate possibility. Amberjack, dorado (mahi mahi), grouper, and snapper also lurk beneath the waves and can be caught at various times of the year. When you’re off the water, San Miguel is a vibrant city featuring markets, beaches, luxury hotels and condos, lively bars, and memorable restaurants.
Jpemex fishing charters is located in the Puerto de Abrigo marina just north of San Miguel. From there, it’s a short ride to the heart of prime fishing waters. Jpemex, while specializing in deep sea fishing, also guides bottom fishing and fly fishing expeditions. Three boats are available for half day (4hrs), three-quarter day (6hrs), or full day (8hrs) charters. Each charter takes care of licensing and includes all necessary fishing equipment, beer, soft-drinks, and snacks; the full day charter includes a beach picnic. The crew takes care of all the cleaning and filleting, and if you need a break from the feisty fish, snorkeling gear is also available. While Cozumel is one of Mexico’s most tropical holiday destinations with warm weather year round, it’s best to plan cautiously during the hurricane season (August to November).
Having guided for 20 years, Captain Juan and his bilingual crew are some of the most experienced fishermen in the Mexican Caribbean. The available boats are The Alexandria, a 32-foot Hatteras, Kelly’s Express, a 32-foot Prowler express, and Estella, a 10-meter Trojan International. Of the three, the Alexandria is the luxury motor boat, with twin Caterpillar 3208 engines, a tuna tower, a built-in live-well, air conditioning, full electronics, and a full bathroom.
Fishing excursions add an unparalleled experience to any vacation. With Jpemex as your guide, you can admire the crystal waters of the islands while enjoying the thrill of catching a trophy fish. But don’t delay—if you’re not reeling in the big one on The Alexandria, someone else is!
