Pesca Mexicana– San Miguel
Sprawling off the Yucatan Peninsula in the Mexican Caribbean is the island of Cozumel, home to Mayan ruins, sunny beaches, and fishing guide Tom Martin of Pesca Mexicana. Cozumel is renowned for its deep sea fishing, but if you need a break from the pitch and roll of the open ocean, the Cozumel flats are a perfect retreat. Situated on the north coast of the island, the flats are home to bonefish, tarpon, permit, and snook. The clear water lets you see the fish from afar, and then you decide your approach—whether you’re an expert caster or prefer the slow boat stalk, the excitement of being surrounded by fish is sure to keep your heart racing.
The Pesca Mexicana guided charter is convenient and simple. Aboard a modest panga, one heads along the coast from San Miguel’s bustling ferry landing to the northern flats. The ankle deep water is best suited for fly fishing or, if you prefer, light tackle. The charter can provide the rods and reels, but recommends that the avid sport fishermen bring their own equipment. The flats can become disruptively windy, so it’s best to plan accordingly by bringing rods and reels suited for such conditions. Hard-soled shoes, polarized sunglasses, sun lotion, and breathable clothing are also recommended. Cast bait, drinks, and snacks, however, are included.
The experienced guides provided by Tom Martin and Pesca Mexicana are bilingual fishermen born and reared near the brackish waters of the Cozumel flats. Their expertise of the area quickly exposes the schools of fish that can be hidden in all sorts of unanticipated places and their expertise of technique ensures that your casting, hooking, and retrieving continuously improve.
On the 35-minute boat ride back to San Miguel, drink a beer, watch the sunset, and enjoy serene beauty in the Mexican Caribbean as you replay your catches and rethink your future holidays: after a day of amazing flats fishing, staying home on your next vacation becomes next to impossible.
