Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada is the ideal luxury vacation destination for all types of people. An abundance of sports and activities are offered at the all-inclusive resort, and guests who want to relax can take advantage of the plunge pools, double hammocks, and chaise lounges set in private gardens or on the beach. The New York Times has called Spice Island “the classic beach resort.” Set directly on the golden sands of Grand Anse Beach, Spice Island is surrounded by lemon, almond and sea grape trees. Guests can indulge in island water activities, such as snorkeling, Hobie Cats, and kayaking. Golf green fees, tennis and cycling are also included. Children are welcome at Spice Island, and parents can take time for themselves by dropping their children off at The Pod for a few hours each day. The supervised play space is open to children aged three to twelve from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Spice Island also caters to guests seeking a romantic or private holiday. The rooms are mini-resorts in themselves, with the option of private pools, gardens, entrances, and Jacuzzis. Sir Royston Hopkins, the owner of Spice Island, encourages couples to “steal away to secluded corners of [the] lush property.” Royston and his family, Grenadian natives, own and operate the year-round boutique resort with a AAA Four-Diamond rating. A well-loved Grenada hotel, Spice Island has received several accolades from the press and was the site of Sports Illustrated’s 2009 swimsuit shoot.
Guests can bask in the tropical scenery from the open-air dining room of Oliver’s Restaurant that overlooks the shores of Grand Anse Beach. Oliver’s features Creole and International cuisine, and offers a vegetarian selection. On Friday nights, the restaurant has a Caribbean buffet with authentic, local food from the islands, while calypso, reggae, or steel bands entertain. In the evening, guests gather at the open-air Sea and Surf Terrace and Bar to have a drink, chat, and watch the sun set. Premium label drinks and a wide selection of house wines are all-inclusive, but wine lovers can sample from an extensive wine list for an additional price.
Travel & Leisure voted Spice Island one of their “20 Favorite Green Hotels” in 2007. The family run resort engages in several environmentally friendly practices, including non-chlorinated swimming pools, solar heating and natural composting. As of 2008, Spice Island is a non-smoking resort. Smoking is not allowed in public places or in private guest rooms. Grenada itself is an island so clean that residents fill water bottles from its natural springs. American architect and interior designer Kobi Karp has redesigned Janissa’s Spa to offer guests the best therapies and treatments utilizing local herbs and spices.
