The historic town of Kamuela houses the Jacaranda Inn, a ranch turned boutique hotel that once housed the paniolo cowboys of the Big Island of Hawaii. The natural diversity found in the Hawaiian islands is at play all around: ice-capped mountains give way to sweeping plains, which rush down to the glistening waters of the Kohala Coast. The rushing streams surrounding the area flow west to the beach and feed the bright tropical vegetation.
Guests of the hotel imbue their holiday with a sense of living history. Unlike hotels that were built with that purpose, the inn once served as bunking for Parker Ranch staff and was converted into charming vacation bungalows. Clear plains and open skies allow perfect stargazing. The inn itself is a study in variation: the buildings have the clean, elegant lines of a plantation while the palms and island flowers burst forth with wild color.
There are eight rooms spread over six buildings at the inn, plus a ninth large cottage that is perfect for large groups or families. Exceptional care is given to the individual decoration of each room: hand-painted accents, deep colors, and a fusion of Victorian and modern design add a sense of whimsy. Each room has a private bathroom, many with comfortable soaking tubs. The separate cottage has a full kitchen, living area, and three bedrooms and bathrooms. Guests should reserve this cottage early, as the incredible views of the Kohala mountains and the Kohakohau stream make this a popular choice.
The paniolos are to Hawaii what cowboys are to mainland America, wild and legendary. The Jacaranda Inn walks the line between old and new, capturing both the rough-and-tumble days of the paniolos and the fun artistry of the modern islands.
Price Range: $119-$450. Additional occupancy fees may apply.
