The Karibea Baie du Galion Resort faces away from the rest of the Caribbean Island ring, on the east coast of Martinique, about halfway up the island on the Caravelle peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean. It is set into the side of a hill, on a 300 meter long protected section of the shore, part of the Tartane fishing village. Due to its location, it is a great launching point for expeditions to the nature reserves, volcanoes and jungles on the northern part of the island.
The ‘galleon bay’ resort combines two hotels, the Baie du Galion hotel and the Goëlette suites. In addition to 3 floors of guest rooms, the resort also provides ample function space, including banquet, cocktail party, and conference facilities equipped with outlets, video projectors, and other audiovisual equipment. There are two giant swimming pools with water slides, as well as game rooms featuring board games and ping-pong tables. The staff speaks French and English; guests may peruse the inside boutique, or take advantage of the luggage room, car rental service, babysitting service, wifi, guided hiking tours, and beach shuttle services.
There are 178 rooms in the Baie du Galion Resort, ranging from regular rooms to junior suites. All rooms come with a television, equipped bathroom, balcony, and kitchenette; the 138 regular rooms include 3 handicapped-friendly rooms, and 27 rooms with shared balcony access; the 40 junior suites also provide a refrigerator, including 2 handicapped-friendly suites. However, ocean/garden views are available only upon request. There is an in-house restaurant, Le Surcouf, which looks out over the pools and ocean and serves a buffet-style combination of French and Créole cuisine. The poolside bar, Le Sextant, has a marine atmosphere, and is where much of the nighttime entertainment takes place.
In fact, the Baie du Galion is among the top resorts that make sure a beach vacation in the Caribbean isn’t lacking in local culture – its weekly shows include folklore groups, games, karaoke, dance nights with djs or local bands, videos on Martinique, village markets, and costume parades, depending on the holiday season!
