With tributes to the island’s Danish, French, Creole, British and Spanish heritage, Carambola has maintained an unspoiled tropical beauty while honoring the Caribbean’s cultural history. Created by Laurance Rockefeller in 1986, the resort’s 150 guest suites, all housed in 26 separate 2-story red-roofed buildings present the classic Caribbean allure of an island fishing village. Only the newly refurnished accommodations, however, provide guests with contemporary amenities like flat screen plasma TVs and full-sized refrigerators. Island décor enhanced by mahogany, granite and marble define the luxury and classic charm of these rooms that are lacking in others.
The three on-site restaurants provide culinary offerings from Caribbean-infused continental cuisine to poolside bar-and-grill fare, topped off by live entertainment and a Friday night Pirate Buffet and Mocko Jumbies Show.
A stretch of secluded beach on Davis Bay provides guests with an idyllic oceanfront setting not found at most hotels. The snorkeling is captivating on the east end while swimming is ideal on the western side’s sandy bottom. Diving is also available with a dive shop on location. Activities abound off the beach as well with tennis courts, fitness facility and all-new Spa De La Mer. Close by is the Carambola Golf and Country Club, boasting an award winning 72-par, 18-hole Robert Trent Jones-designed course.
It is important to note that, in he true spirit of vacation isolation, cell phone reception is nonexistent on the property and free wireless internet access is restricted to a couple of areas. In addition, the hotel’s distance from Christiansted, the airport and off-site destinations calls for a rental car.
