Our Beautiful Island
Elbow Cay in the Bahamas is just East of Great Abaco Island. The cay is a crescent shape with a large protected harbor found in the center of it. The main settlement of Hope Town is filled with pastel colored homes and buildings making it look like a New England fishing village. The protection of a magnificent barrier reef means that this tiny cay is ringed by stunning sandy beaches perfect for relaxing in the sun or swimming, fishing, snorkeling or diving in the clear tropical waters. Daily and weekly sail boat and motor boat rentals are available for those who would like to spend their holiday on the water. For those who prefer to sleep on land, hotels, resorts, private luxury villa rentals and vacation home rentals are all available either in Hope Town or dotted across the island.
Things To Do
The atmosphere on Elbow Cay is definitely one of relaxation. This is an island where you can go to escape from the rigors of everyday life. On the plus side, with a short ferry or boat ride, you can visit any number of other islands and cays to take part in the many events that happen throughout the year. One such event not to be missed is the Junkanoo festival that takes place in the summer months in Marsh Harbour.
Places To Go
The cay was settled in the 18th century by British loyalists fleeing the United States. As such, it has a rich history and culture. Hope Town is known for the red and white lighthouse that was built in 1863 on the approach to the protected harbor. The Wyannie Malone Museum in Hope Town is a must for history buffs as it describes the life and times of the island.
Because of the protection of the reef, the waters that surround the cay are a paradise for boaters and divers alike. The waters are usually smooth and clear, meaning that they are safe for all levels of water enthusiasts. This also means that Elbow Cay is a beach lover’s paradise with miles of fine white sand to enjoy during your holiday.
Getting Around The Island
While cars operate on the cay, there are no car rental agencies. To get around, golf carts and bicycles can be rented by visitors. There is a road network across the island, allowing visitors to reach all areas. It’s worth noting that most cars and carts can drive up to, but not through Hope Town.
Getting To and From The Island
Visitors can only travel to Elbow Cay by boat. If you are not arriving by private boat or by renting a boat, there is a daily ferry that runs from Marsh Harbour to Elbow Cay. For travelers who are flying in, they must land in Marsh Harbour and then travel by sea to the cay.
Elbow Cay is the ideal location for those looking for a romantic or relaxing retreat during their holiday. You will feel like you have stepped back in time when you arrive amongst the colorfully painted houses and lush tropical flowers of the streets of Hope Town.
