Things To Do
Marsh Harbour is the main city on Great Abaco Island and the Junkanoo Summer Festival is not to be missed. The street festival takes place over a number of nights in June and July and gives visitors an introduction to Bahamian culture, including music, art, dance and native dishes.
In August 2010, Great Abaco plays host to the Americas Cup of Darts. This is the first time this competition has been hosted in the Bahamas since 1989.
Places To Go
Great Abaco itself has miles of beaches, but add to that the many surrounding cays and you have a water-lover’s paradise. Fishing, snorkeling and diving opportunities abound as do sail boat and motor boat rentals. In this tropical paradise, it is easy to spend your days enjoying the tranquil, turquoise Abaco Sea.
Land lover’s need not worry, as there is plenty to see and do with your feet firmly planted on the ground. Those looking for a beach vacation will be spoiled for choice when it comes to the myriad of beaches to choose from. There are also a number of different historical landmarks and unique attractions to be enjoyed.
Getting Around The Island
Getting around Great Abaco occurs at a leisurely pace. Car rental is available to get to the more secluded areas of the island. Water taxis and ferries transport visitors between the beaches and cays located on the island and on other nearby islands.
Getting To and From The Island
An international airport is located at Marsh Harbour with flights offered by a number of airlines direct from Florida. Both regularly scheduled commercial airlines and private and charter airlines fly into the airport making travel to Great Abaco easy and convenient. Ferries run daily between Grand Bahama Island and Marsh Harbour, while other ferries run weekly from Nassau.
